In the 2014 report "Stepping Up: The Top K-12 Education Foundations in the Nation" conducted by Dewey & Associates, the Hillsborough Education Foundation ranked #2 in Florida, and #6 in the nation.
The study was opened up this year to include the 100 largest school district K-12 Foundations, up from the previous top 50. Dewey & Associates, located here in the Tampa Bay area, conducts the survey, and brings together a panel of experts to pour over the 990 reports filed with the IRS by 501(c)3 Foundations each year. There are eight performance categories which were measured as reported in the 990. These are revenues, revenues per student, assets, assets per student, grant and program expenses, grant and program expenses per student, investment income, and volunteers.
The study also explores some of the challenges that most Education Foundations face, such as lack of recognition in the community. The report states, "A single parent knows the name of the scholarship program that will send her oldest to college – the first in her family; but she doesn’t know it’s the education foundation that raised the money for the scholarship and operates the program."
