Guests Invest BIG IN Students at the 2018 EmpowerED Luncheon
On September 11th, Hillsborough Education Foundation hosted the annual EmpowerED Luncheon at Armature Works, raising $96,726 (as of 10/1/18) to support the mission of the organization.
Formerly titled “Teaching Tools,” the luncheon provided the opportunity to showcase the entirety of our organization’s mission. From Take Stock In Children to School & Classroom Grants, every aspect of what we do to impact students was on display.
Christian Bermudez, a senior from Steinbrenner High School, joined President, Kim Jowell to co-emcee the event and take attendees on a journey through 30 facts about our organization; a numerical play on the celebration of HEF’s 30th anniversary.
Suncoast Credit Union CEO and HEF board member, Kevin Johnson was the first guest speaker to take the stage. During his time, he shared how deep education is weaved into the fabric of the company, and how committed SCU is to its partnership with HEF to support students and teachers.
Superintendent, Jeff Eakins then approached the podium and discussed the outstanding partnership between the school district and HEF. He also set the stage for the need of the half-penny referendum and what it would mean for the betterment of every students across Hillsborough County.
HEF was also honored to award its 2nd annual Sue House Champion for Teaching Tools Award to George Suter. For over 11 years, George has faithfully volunteered in the store, logging over 2,500 volunteer awards over that time period. David Seis, a teacher from Dr. Carter G. Woodson K-8 Leadership Academy, then took the stage to highlight his experiences as a regular shopper in the teaching tools store, as well a recipient of a classroom grant.
We then closed the show with powerful words from Day’Nay Oates, an 8th grade students at Memorial Middle School. She shared how, despite the many obstacles that she has faced, education remains her focus and she is laser-focused on achieving all of our goals; thanks in large part to a strong support system, both at school and home.
The event was a resounding success and we are already looking forward to next year!
Special thanks to Suncoast Credit Union for once again serving as presenting sponsor, as well as all of our event sponsors for supporting students in need!
