If you meet all of the requirements in our “Should I mentor?” Quiz , then it’s time to get started!
You can also fill out an application at the Mentor Orientation.
Every week, our staff hosts a 1.5-hour orientation at the Hillsborough Education Foundation office, located at 2306 N. Howard Ave. Tampa, FL 33607. During the first half of the orientation, you’ll learn more about the program. If you like what you hear, you can stick around for the second half of orientation, where you will be trained on interacting with your student scholar. RSVP for an upcoming Mentor Orientation with [email protected].

Due to the nature of a Mentor’s interaction with Scholars, Mentors must be able to pass a criminal background check.
Once a potential Mentor submits an application, the Mentor will be contacted by a Foundation staff member. Foundation staff will carefully match the Mentor with a student Scholar who will benefit most from the Mentor's specific experience, perspective, talents and personality. The staff member will present his or her potential matches to the Mentor and they can decide whether or not they would like to go forward with that particular Scholar. If the proposed Scholar match does not work for the Mentor for any reason, the staff member will find another Scholar.
After the Mentor has confirmed the Scholar match, the staff member will schedule the first meeting. At this introductory meeting, the staff member will introduce the Mentor and Scholar and ask both to sign the necessary documents to proceed with mentoring.
Once the Mentor and Scholar are matched they will begin meeting on school grounds during designated days and times. Mentors provide weekly time logs to the Hillsborough Education Foundation that report the time spent with their student Scholar. These processes will be explained in further detail at Mentor Orientation. After the first meeting, the staff member will continue to monitor the Mentor/Scholar relationship and will be available to address any questions or concerns. Perhaps this is why most of our Mentors maintain their relationships with their Scholars year after year, all the way to high school graduation - and even sometimes into college. Throughout it all, you’ll have the confidence of knowing the entire organization is here to support you, just as you’re there for your Scholar.
