Matching Funds Help Schools Improve Technology

Advances in instructional technology quickly create outdated equipment in public schools. With a limited budget for improvements each year, principals have to be extremely selective in spending. The Hillsborough Education Foundation provides matched funding to help the schools with this challenge. This unique program is a grant jointly administered by the Foundation and the Hillsborough County Public School District.

The additional technology allows teachers to get even more creative with teaching techniques. One of the first grants allowed schools to implement a literacy program which utilized music and singing (“Tune into Reading”) to develop reading skills. This program was piloted through the Technology Matching Grant program and is currently being evaluated for further distribution in the district. This is an excellent example of where private dollars allowed the introduction of an innovative program.
