Mentoring

Students and Volunteers benefit from Scholarship & Mentoring Program

"Having a mentor gave me the sight to see and appreciate the different opportunities I have in my life to become successful.  My mentor keeps me on the right tracks and shows me the right way of doing things by his experience." ~ Kendall, Take Stock in Children mentee

The Take Stock in Children program provides mentors to students who receive Florida Prepaid Scholarships through the Hillsborough Education Foundation.

Prospective mentors agree to a background check and attend a one hour training course to help them have successful interactions with their mentees. A mentoring handbook is provided to each volunteer. Mentors are then matched with students with whom they will be compatible. The student generally spends one hour per week with the mentor at school.

The Hillsborough Education Foundation recruits and trains mentors for the program.  Who can be a mentor?  Any responsible adult who is willing and able to share time with a student on a consistent basis can mentor. Your listening ear, valuable guidance, and academic assistance will help a student experience greater success in their studies and in their lives.

Mentors do make a difference.  Students who qualify for mentors have been awarded the promise of a prepaid tuition scholarship for postsecondary education as an incentive to stay in school and achieve their academic goals.  As the scholarship program grows, so does the need for more mentors.  Mentors have said they get more out of mentoring their students than they believe the students could possibly get!

Help change a student's life, become a mentor today!

As students begin to realize that someone cares, school absenteeism decreases, academic performance improves and  self esteem increases.
